Welcome to the Outpost Universe! The Outpost Universe is a fan site devoted to the Sierra released games Outpost 1 and Outpost 2: Divided Destiny. Feel free to drop by our IRC channel for a few games of Outpost 2, or some realtime chat with other fans. Or perhaps drop by our forums and leave us a message or join in on one of the topics. Here we have extensive discussions of gameplay, storylines, modding, or the latest patches, releases and projects being worked on. The Outpost Universe has managed to attract both gamers and programmers alike. If you're a gamer, than join up with the other gamers for a few quick skirmishes over IRC, or perhaps discuss strategy on the forums. If you're a programmer, or looking to get into programming, then you are sure to find a few like minded people who can share what they know, or help you along. Or if you're a gamer who is looking for precise descriptions of how Outpost 2 works internally so you can perfectly optimize your next killer strategy, well, we have people that can probably help with that too. Currently, the Outpost Universe offers a NetFix patch to help people play Outpost 2 over the internet who are behind a home router. It's not a complete WON replacement, but it's a significant step in the right direction. We also have a Hamachi network setup for people who would prefer to play over a VPN. For level designers, we have a mission development kit and map editor if you want to try your hand at making new Outpost 2 levels, but be warned, you pretty much have to be a programmer to use these tools, and you'll need a C++ compiler. Bug fixes and enhancement patches are also provided for various issues that have cropped up over the years, such as the option button highlighting, screen resolution issues, network gameplay problems, or just wanting to build twice as many units. We also provide a patched version with the cheats disabled, so you'll never again have to worry about cheats ruining your next online game of Outpost 2. Please be advised that different versions of Outpost 2 are not compatible with each other in network games, and most people here choose to use the patched version from the download section. The list of bug fixes and enhancments included is too large to list here, but if you're curious to see what we've done with the game, then check out ChangeLog.txt included in the download package. So, why not stop by our forums to signup and say "Hello!", and see our current projects. News Game Server On Irc MachinePosted by Hooman on Jul 1 2009, 01:19 PM GMT | Comments: 4 A copy of the Game Server has been setup on the IRC machine. I'll probably set it as the default server during the next update. For now though, I'm mostly just telling everyone so they can use it as a backup in case the other one goes down. I don't recommend changing any settings at the moment, as a game hosted on one server will not be visible to people using the other server. I figure this should change during a version upgrade when the new version becomes incompatible with the old version and everyone is forced to upgrade at the same time. There are two main reasons for doing this. One is that the IRC machine has a static IP address and so it won't move around on you. The current server is on a machine with a dynamic IP address, although, the IP address probably hasn't changed in about a year. The other reason is that the machine currently hosting the game server is going to be replaced sometime in the near future. When that happens, the game server will probably be down for at least a few minutes and I wanted to have a backup running. The interruption should be short, and the default game server will stay running at the current IP until at least the next Outpost 2 release. If you need to manually change settings, just edit Outpost2.ini, look for the [NetFix] section and change the server address to: GameServerAddr = "irc.outpost2.net" In other news, when the game server machine gets replaced, the older copy of the game server for the 1.3.4 R2 version will go down. It will not be restarted. If you're still using 1.3.4 R2 for multiplayer, you'll have to upgrade to 1.3.5 Beta 2 (or later?) to use the game server. If this is a problem for anyone, then let me know and I may considering looking into starting up another copy of the old version. The SVN server will also be unavailable during the transition period. Website UpdatePosted by Hooman on Jun 23 2009, 12:43 AM GMT | Comments: 8 Some of you may have noticed a few more web site updates happening over the last little while. They were mostly just small changes and cleanup, but a few sections have been substantially revised. It should now have the same general style and layout throughout. The website should also be free of broken links, and is actually valid xhtml now. At least the parts reachable from the main page are free of broken links and are valid xhtml. There were a few incomplete sections which basically had links leading into them removed, but the pages are still there for whoever wants to type the URL in manually, or has found a link from somewhere else. I'm as of yet undecided if these sections should be somehow completed and linked back in with the rest, or if they should just be dropped. The missing parts basically consist of the online help section. It didn't seem too helpful though. It basically had a main page with lots of broken links, and a link to some glossary of terms. There were a couple other valid links, but those pages are already linked to from elsewhere. So basically, we'd lose the glossary. I'm thinking dump it. Thoughts anyone? Also, is there something you'd consider needing high priority revision? Or something you think we should create or expand upon? Website UpdatedPosted by Hooman on Jun 14 2009, 03:13 AM GMT | Comments: 4 The website has undergone a bit of a much needed update. There's still plenty of work that needs to be done, and lots of broken links that still need fixing. But at least the current game download, that people have been using for months, is now actually featured on the download page!
